Who BLS Certification Is For

This certification is built for the people whose employer, school, or program specifically requires Basic Life Support rather than standard CPR. Typical participants include:

  • Nurses and nursing students
  • Medical assistants
  • EMS-related roles
  • Clinical and support staff in patient-care environments
  • Other healthcare professionals where a professional-level emergency response credential is required.

Upcoming BLS Training Dates

If your role is non-clinical, standard CPR and AED certification is usually the right fit instead. BLS is the more advanced credential designed for the demands of clinical and team-based response scenarios.

What BLS Training Includes

BLS training covers the response sequence used in clinical and patient-care environments. It assumes you are responding alongside other trained professionals, so the technique standards and team-coordination expectations exceed standard CPR.

High-quality CPR

When dealing with adult, child, and infant response, BLS holds participants to the compression depth, rate, and recoil standards that hospital systems and EMS organizations expect during a real event. The technique covers all three age groups, with the specific compression-to-breath ratios, hand placement adjustments, and pacing standards that apply in clinical settings. Compressions get significant hands-on practice because the difference between effective and ineffective compressions can determine outcomes.

AED use in a clinical context

AED training in BLS covers when to apply, how to coordinate pad placement during ongoing CPR without interrupting compressions, and how to manage shock delivery as part of a team response. The mechanics are similar to standard CPR’s AED component, but the team-coordination expectations are higher and the technique standards stricter.

Response to breathing and airway emergencies.

BLS covers airway management, when and how to use barrier devices and bag-valve-mask ventilation, and how to recognize and respond to airway obstructions and respiratory failures before they progress. This is one of the areas where BLS substantively exceeds what standard CPR teaches, because clinical responders are expected to manage airway issues that bystanders would simply call for help on.

Team-based response

Techniques used in healthcare and patient-care settings. This is the section that most distinguishes BLS from standard CPR. The course covers how multiple responders divide roles during a code, how leadership rotates between responders to prevent fatigue, how compressors switch every two minutes to maintain quality, and how the team communicates as a unit. In a real clinical setting, team coordination determines outcomes as much as individual technique. BLS trains participants to function as part of a healthcare response team, not just as individuals attempting CPR alone.

Hands-on skill

The in-person portion of the class is built around skill demonstration, not lecture. Participants run through the response sequences on training equipment, with the instructor coaching and correcting in real time. By the end of class, you should be able to integrate into a team response at a hospital code, urgent care emergency, or clinical setting and contribute the role expected of a BLS-certified responder.

How BLS Certification Works: Two Steps

The CORE Academy BLS certification follows the American Red Cross blended learning format. There are two required steps and both must be completed to earn your certification.

Core Academy Training Home

STEP 1

Complete the American Red Cross online course on your own time.

After registration, you receive access to the American Red Cross online learning module – a self-paced course that covers the clinical theory behind BLS: high-quality CPR standards, airway management, team-based response, and the technique expectations for patient-care settings.

You work through it at home or wherever is convenient, before your scheduled in-person session. This typically takes about 4 to 5 hours. You must complete the online module before attending the in-person session.

STEP 2

Attend the in-person skills session at The CORE Academy in Wilkes-Barre. The in-person session is where the BLS certification is earned. You practice every skill on training manikins and AED units with a certified Red Cross instructor present to coach and correct. Team-based response sequences are practiced with other participants so you experience the clinical coordination component of BLS, not just the individual technique.

You demonstrate the skills, the instructor signs off, and your digital certificate is issued. Your certification is valid for 2 years from the course completion date.

Your digital American Red Cross BLS certificate arrives by email once you pass both the online module and the in-person skills competency test.

BLS Compared to CPR Certification

Both BLS and CPR teach life-saving response skills. The differences matter for which one you need. BLS is the more advanced certification, designed for clinical and patient-care professionals. It includes team-based response techniques and professional-level emergency care expectations beyond standard CPR.

What Jobs Need BLS?

Standard CPR and AED certification is the broader option for non-clinical roles. Teachers, coaches, childcare staff, and workplace team members who need emergency response readiness without the clinical depth typically take CPR. If your employer or program specifically says BLS, take BLS. If it says CPR, take CPR. The simplest rule.

Why The CORE Academy

We are an American Red Cross Licensed Training Provider (LTP), which means we are independently licensed to teach and certify. Classes are hands-on, paced for working healthcare professionals, and built around real clinical response situations. Instructors who answer questions rather than rush the room. You leave with the skill, not just the certificate.

CORE stands for Creating Opportunities for Reflection & Education. For BLS, reflection means understanding why a step matters during a real cardiac or breathing emergency, not just running the algorithm.
