If you earned a CPR card a couple of years ago, there is a good chance it is expiring soon, or already has. Here is how long certifications last, when to recertify, and what to do if yours has lapsed.
The short answer: two years
American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and BLS certifications are valid for two years from your course completion date. That two-year window is standard across these certifications, including the certifications The CORE Academy offers.
Your digital certificate shows your completion date, so you always know when the clock runs out.
Why certifications expire
Emergency response skills fade without practice, and guidelines get updated as research improves. The two-year cycle exists to make sure that the people holding a certification still have current skills and current knowledge. Employers and programs rely on that, which is why most require a current, unexpired certification rather than one you earned years ago.
When to recertify
Recertify before your current certification expires. Waiting until after it lapses can create a gap that affects your job, your clinical rotation, or your program eligibility. A good habit is to schedule your recertification a few weeks ahead of the expiration date on your certificate.
If your role depends on staying certified, set a reminder for about 90 days before your expiration date so you have time to find a class that fits your schedule.
What happens if your certification lapses
