Who This Certification Is For

One class covers it

The CORE Academy teaches First Aid, CPR and AED together in a single American Red Cross class: First Aid, CPR & AED Training, $100. We do not run a First Aid-only class. The two are taught together because in a real emergency you rarely get to choose which one you need, and the combined course costs what most providers charge for CPR alone.

If you came here looking for first aid certification, this is the class. You will leave certified in First Aid, CPR and AED, all American Red Cross, all valid for two years. If your employer or licensing body has told you they require a standalone first aid certificate, call us at (570) 301-3316 before you register and we will tell you straight whether the combined Red Cross credential meets the requirement.

Workplace | First Aid

This class is the right fit for:
  • Workplace teams with safety responsibilities
  • School staff
  • Camp and recreation leaders
  • Childcare providers
  • Community program staff
  • Anyone whose employer or program asks for First Aid training
If your role calls for response to injuries, allergic reactions, sudden illness, or other non-clinical medical situations, this is the certification. If you also need CPR coverage, the First Aid + CPR certification combines both in one class. For workplaces that want broader emergency response readiness, the combined option is usually the better value.

What the Class Covers

This class covers the American Red Cross First Aid curriculum, taught together with CPR and AED. The class is built around the kinds of medical situations a non-clinical responder might actually face in a workplace, school, or community setting, where injuries and illnesses tend to develop over minutes rather than seconds.

Before Giving Care

The opening section of the certification teaches the response sequence before any hands-on intervention. How to assess a scene safely so you do not become a second casualty. When to call for help, and when acting first makes more sense and how to manage bystanders and family members at the scene. Whether to act at all, based on what you can see and what you know. This is the foundation that turns First Aid training from a checklist into actual response capability.

Bloodborne Pathogens

The Bloodborne Pathogens section covers how to protect yourself and the person you are helping while providing care. Universal precautions, when and how to use barrier equipment, exposure response, and the OSHA-aligned practices that workplace First Aid is expected to follow. For employees designated as workplace responders, this section also aligns with employer compliance requirements.

Emergency Care Situations

This is the longest section of the certification and covers the specific response procedures for heart attacks, stroke, anaphylaxis, breathing emergencies, heat-related emergencies (heat exhaustion through heat stroke), cold-related emergencies (hypothermia, frostbite), seizure response, and shock. Each situation is taught as a recognition-plus-response sequence, not as memorized symptom lists.

Wound care

The wound care section covers the response to cuts, bleeding (including severe bleeding control with direct pressure and tourniquets where applicable), burns, splinting fractures and sprains, and managing injuries until EMS arrives or higher-level care is available.

Hands-on skill practice paced for adult learners. Every section includes hands-on demonstrations on training equipment. The in-person portion of the certification is built around the principle that adult learners need to do the thing, not just hear about the thing. The instructor coaches and corrects in real time. By the end of class, you should be able to walk through a First Aid response on your own confidence.

Standalone First Aid does not include CPR or AED training. If you need those too, the combined First Aid and CPR certification covers both areas in one session and is usually the better choice for workplace teams.

How This Certification Works: Two Steps

The CORE Academy delivers First Aid certification through the American Red Cross blended learning format. There are two required steps and both must be completed to earn your certification.

Core Academy Training Home

STEP 1

Complete the American Red Cross online course on your own time. After registration, you receive access to the American Red Cross online learning module – a self-paced course covering First Aid theory: scene safety, bloodborne pathogens, emergency care situations, and wound care. You work through it before your scheduled in-person session, at home or wherever is convenient. This typically takes about 2 to 3 hours. You must complete the online module before attending the in-person session.

STEP 2

Attend the in-person skills session at The CORE Academy in Wilkes-Barre. The in-person session is where the certification is earned. You practice First Aid response skills on training equipment with a certified Red Cross instructor coaching and correcting in real time. You demonstrate the skills, the instructor signs off on your competency, and your digital certificate is issued.

Your certification is valid for 2 years from the course completion date. Your digital American Red Cross First Aid certificate arrives by email once you pass both the online module and the in-person skills competency test.

Compared to First Aid + CPR and BLS

The Practical Option

First Aid certification alone covers injury and sudden-illness response. It is the right choice when CPR is not required for your role. If you need CPR coverage too, the First Aid + CPR certification covers both topics in a single session. For workplace teams, that combined class is usually the more practical option. If you need an advanced credential for healthcare or patient-care settings, BLS is the right path. BLS is for clinical staff. First Aid certification is for everyone else.
