Looking Beyond the Immediate Behavior: Triggers, Patterns & Context

About Course

Understanding behavior requires looking beyond what happened in a single moment. Behavioral patterns can be influenced by people, environments, expectations, transitions, routines, sensory experiences, communication challenges, and other contextual factors. This course helps participants develop a broader approach to observing and understanding behavior by examining what happens before, during, and after behavioral responses. Participants will learn to identify recurring patterns, separate observation from assumption, and use contextual information to make more informed decisions about behavioral support.

What Will You Learn?

  • Identify environmental, relational, situational, and individual factors that may influence behavior.
  • Recognize recurring triggers, patterns, and circumstances associated with behavioral responses.
  • Examine what occurs before, during, and after a behavior to better understand the surrounding context.
  • Differentiate between objective behavioral observations and assumptions or interpretations about why a behavior occurred.
  • Identify how transitions, expectations, routines, communication, sensory experiences, and interpersonal interactions may contribute to behavioral patterns.
  • Use information about patterns and context to develop more proactive, individualized, and intentional behavioral support strategies.
